JANNIS MARKOPOULOS JANNIS MARKOPOULOS

PICTURIZATION OF THINGS VISIBLE AND INVISIBLE

How can one describe the work of Jannis Markopoulos? As illusions? Hallucinations? Or dreams? In any case, his artworks suffer neither the nebulosity of illusion nor the realism of hallucination. They are not motionless like visions. They are volatile like dreams. Indeed, dreaming is an assemblage of symbols that can only coexist in dreamy painting.

Markopoulos is working with the idea of absurd, that for him absurd means the “humanly impossible”, not the “logical improbable”. He works in the art of illusions, based on the fact that the optical contact with an exhibit, usually, dominates the rest of senses. Certain works of illusions are based on general assumptions the brain makes during the process of perception.
