NIKOS GAVALLAS NIKOS GAVALLAS

PLANES

Gavallas exchanges places with the empirical ancestral figure. He depicts the carpenter’s tools by becoming a carpenter himself, though with a brush in place of the saw. At the same time, he attempts a retroactive relationship with the carpenter, by creating and providing the absent artisan with the tools he has already used. He creates, that is, for his father, in a mental reversal of time, the tools he is to work with... The woodworker remains alive like a recorded memory, like a worshipped totem, like an artisan who is gently but authoritatively guiding the painter’s hand.
